TEDxBarcelonaSalon: Capitalismo

About this event :

Thomas Piketty: New thoughts on capital in the 21st century

French economist Thomas Piketty caused a sensation in early 2014 with his book on a simple, brutal formula explaining economic inequality: r > g (meaning that return on capital is generally higher than economic growth). Here, he talks through the massive data set that led him to conclude: Economic inequality is not new, but it is getting worse, with radical possible impacts.
Thomas Piketty is an economist and professor at the Paris School of Economics.

The talk
We started the event screening the TED talk of Thomas Piketty (english video with spanish subtitles). In his talk, he summarises the result of his research and shows it with various examples.
The discussion
After watching the talk we discussed among all about the advantages and disadvantages of the capitalism. Each and everyone asked questions and expressed his/her opinion thus contributing to our always interesting discussion.
The networking
As always, after the discussion we had the possibility to do networking while enjoying drinks and tapas for everyone. (included in the entrance fee)

Summary of the event
One of the most discussed topics was education at different levels. Educate society in an entrepreneurial way means people having dreams and desiring to carry them out. On the other hand, this must go hand in hand with social education, we should instill values and ethical code to future generations that allows a responsible business growth. We are responsible for what we consume and who are we buying. We have to understand it is not just about “them” and “us” issue, everybody is responsible in greater or lesser extent.
Not all the public agreed with inherited capitals. Heirs, in many cases, do not valorate their fortune and won’t know how to invest it properly.
“The problem is not who has the money, but what they do with it”. With these words, one participant linked family heirlooms and tax system. He noted that there would have to change whole, simpremente make some minor adjustments, make it truly fair.
At the end of the evening there was also room for external agents such as lobbies or intelligence, sometimes try to put their own interests.
In short, they made it clear that we must not forget that we are in this global village that McLuhan predicted, and if changes are made to a tax system to redistribute wealth, to be effective and prevent tax evasion among other would have to be all over the globe at a time.
