TEDxChange 2013
TEDxChange is an event created out of a partnership between the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the TEDx program. It is an initiative devoted to ideas worth spreading in the areas of global health and development. It is meant to help facilitate meaningful discussions on topics including vaccines, polio, malaria, HIV/AIDS, maternal and newborn child health and agricultural development.
Theme TEDxChange 2013: Positive disruption
Disruption is usually unwelcome. It represents conflict, chaos, and potential danger. But disruption can be a positive – sometimes vital – catalyst for change. It can challenge old assumptions, ignite conversations, activate authorities and expose new possibilities. Disruption can shed a unique light on difficult issues, giving a fresh urgency and perspective to the challenges of our global community. To solve the most intractable challenges in health and development, we need positive disruption. It is the path to true progress. Jordi Martí – ASHOKA Fellow, Founder of DBS Screening, Barcelona Jordi has developed an early blood diagnosis system for infectious as well as chronic diseases, accessible for underprivileged or out of reach communities which would otherwise remain excluded from the health system. Through a simple, economic, efficient, accessible and painless technique, he avoids the feared injection, eliminates the cold chain and democratizes the prevention of chronicle diseases as diabetes, kidney insufficiency, child obesity … and infectious diseases as AIDS, syphilis, hepatitis, etc.. Some impact figures: Jordi launched a pilot initiative in Brazil, reaching more than 200.000 pregnant women, avoiding the infection with AIDS or syphilis of 50.000 children in the state of Rio in the coming five years.
Montserrat Vendrell – CEO of Biocat, Barcelona
Montserrat Vendrell (Barcelona, 1964) is BIOCAT’s CEO since April 2007. BIOCAT is the organization that promotes biotechnology, biomedicine and health technologies in Catalonia. It is fostered by the Government of Catalonia, Barcelona City Council, companies, hospitals, universities and research institutions. As a cluster organization, Biocat’s goals include the development of biotechnology and the healthcare sector through the implementation of specific programs and initiatives, with a particular focus in supporting entrepreneurs. Before BIOCAT, she was involved in the planning, launching and running of Barcelona Science Park, the first of its kind in Spain, where she held several responsibilities as Scientific Director (1997-2005) and Deputy Director General (2005-2007). Among other tasks, Dr. Vendrell led the design and implementation of the Strategic Plan of the Park, as well as the organization and management of scientific activities and technological platforms. She was member of the Steering Committee of the Park’s biotech Incubator, and responsible for the international relations. Dr. Vendrell holds a PhD in Biology (Universitat de Barcelona) and a long experience in biomedical research in different international institutions. She holds a Science Communication Master degree (UPF, 1997) and an Executive Management Degree (IESE, PDG-2007). She is Chairwoman of CEBR (Council of European Bioregions) since 2012.
Quique Bassat – Assistant Research Professor, Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal), Barcelona
Pediatrician (Graduated in 2004 from Hospital Vall d’Hebrón of Barcelona), specialized in tropical medicine (Master in Tropical medicine and international health, Barcelona university, 2004) and epidemiology (Master in epidemiology, London School of tropical medicine and higiene, London 2007-08). Large experience in clinical trials in developing countries, having participated in different trials of the antimalarial RTS,S vaccines in Mozambique, and having managed different antimalarial treatments trials in the same country, as well as various clinical-epidiomological studies in the malaria field in particular and in infectious diseases in general. Based more than three years in Manhiça, Mozambique. Currently working at CRESIB, the research centre of the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) where he coordinates the implementation of projects related to malaria in countries as Mozambique, Brasil, India or Papúa New Guinea.
Joya Banerjee, Co-Founder of the Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS, New York
GYCA is a youth-led network of over 7,000 young leaders working to end the spread of HIV in 173 countries worldwide. GYCA empowers young people with the knowledge, skills, resources and opportunities they need to be effective agents of change in their communities. Joya co-founded the network at age 22 with a diverse coalition of young global leaders, directed the organization for five years, and now serves on its Advisory Board. She holds a B.A. in Human Rights and Political Science from Barnard College of Columbia University, and a Master of Science in Global Health and Population from the Harvard School of Public Health. Joya has experience in HIV/AIDS as an activist, researcher, implementer, grantmaker and fundraiser across sectors, including the United Nations, the US Government, small and large NGOs and academic institutions. She currently works as a Manager at GBCHealth, a coalition of 200 private sector companies tackling the world’s most pressing health challenges. Joya has short and long-term field experience in 14 countries, and she believes in approaches to public health and development that prioritize the leadership of the Global South.
Dr. Lluis Pareras, Director Healthequity, Barcelona
Healthequity is a venture capital fund investing in healthcare. Neurosurgeon, PhD, and Global Executive MBA (IESE), Lluis analyzes more than 400 business plans per year. Board member of several healthcare startups, he is also author of more than 10 books dealing with innovation, technology, venture capital and healthcare.
Paula Farias, Ex President Doctors without Borders Spain, Barcelona Paula Farias is a Medical Doctor who has spent the majority of her professional life working in humanitarian action. After finished her studies in Tropical Medicine, she spent several years sailing around the world as a deckhand doctor on the Greenpeace ships. During the Balkans war she started working for Médecins Sans Frontières. While in this organization she was part of the Emergency Unit, coordinating emergency interventions to respond to natural disasters, epidemics, famines, and armed conflicts in countries like Afganistan, Kosovo, Irak, Congo, Darfur, and more. In 2006 she was elected President of the Organization, a position in which she continued up to January 2011. Her work as a humanitarian actor has always been accompanied by a parallel and personal, work as a writer, publishing articles in several media channels. She is also the author of several books. Currently, Ms Farias is Project Manager of POSITIVE GENERATION – a communication project of MSF on HIV, an initiative which is in fact the fruit of her very first TED talk. Ms Farias also dedicates time to consultancy, teaching activities and to the care of her three small children.
Fran Equiza, Oxfam GB’s Regional Director for the Horn, East and Central Africa (HECA), Nairobi
As the Regional Director for the HECA region, Fran provides strategic leadership for Oxfam’s work towards the alleviation of poverty and suffering across eight countries, which includes responding to humanitarian crises, supporting livelihoods, campaigning for change, and promoting good governance. In addition, Fran is the global lead on Oxfam’s corporate objective of “Right to be heard,” which aims to raise the voices of citizens. He holds a Bachelors and Masters in Business Administration, a Masters in Information and Knowledge Society Studies, and a Masters in Applied Economic Analysis. He is also a graduate in Advanced Studies in Human Development and Governance. He speaks fluent Spanish, English, Catalan and French. www.BeyondTheTribe.net
Jordi Renart – Responsible for Partnerships and External Relations for the United Nations World Food Programme in East and Central Africa– Nairobi Prior to that, he served as Programme Coordinator in the Office of WFP’s Executive Director in Rome, advising the Executive Director on a range of portfolio issues including Food Markets, Trade, and Global Governance Institutions. Before joining the Office of the Executive Director, Jordi worked in the Policy and Strategy Division, helping draft WFP’s 2008-2013 Strategic Plan. Prior to joining WFP in 2006, he held positions in a Paris-based wealth management firm and in the cabinet of the European Union Trade Commissioner in Brussels. Jordi holds a degree in Economics and Business Administration from the University of Navarra in Spain and a Master in International Trade and Development from the Institut d’Études Politiques in Paris. He has a lifelong appetite for being at the cutting-edge of current events and a passion for culture, particularly literature and art. He is fluent in English, French, Spanish, Italian and Catalan.
Sindre Olav Edland-Gryt – Human rights campaigner for www.saih.no and africafornorway.com – Norway
Sindre was in the team behind the viral video “Africa for Norway” viewed by over two million people and with a massive media coverage ( BBC, NY Times, Al Jazeera and Le Monde and more). Using humor the Norwegian organization successfully challenged the negative perception of Africa. By turning the tables the spoof video has sparked a lot of debate and self-reflection in both media and development organization. SAIH is ran by students and academic and supports educational organizations in five countries in Latin-America and Africa. In Norway they do advocacy/information work on development issues under the slogan “Education for liberation”. SAIH was founded 50 years ago as a reaction to the struggle against apartheid. Sindre is a self-trained communication professional and wrote his master’s thesis on religion and development. One of Sindre’s mantras is why creativity and humor is key to getting people involved in the fight against human rights. He believes that the repeat portrayal of negative images often creates apathy and a feeling of hopelessness.
Georgina Tremayne- Communication and Marketing Director Social diabetes– Spain
Georgina Tremayne spent a decade working across the UK and Europe for a specialist software firm. She moved to New York on their behalf to expand operations internationally and spent a decade in the US. Then she set up a recruitment firm in New York and ultimately recruited on behalf of Fortune 100 companies in the financial services and technology sectors for executive level positions spanning the globe. Now, in Barcelona, she writes and teaches at businesses and universities, and creates strategy and implementation for firms expanding internationally. She is part of the SocialDiabetes team as a Communication and Marketing director. She has a BA Hons in English Literature from the University of Stirling, Scotland.
Kate Michi Ettinger – Social entrepreneur and health care ethics consultant-mediator, San Francisco
Trained in the law, bioethics and conflict resolution with over twelve years of health-related experience in private, government, academic, non-profit sectors. Provide consulting services to hospital, ethics consultation services on ethics cases, conflict resolution, consultation services development and ethics education programming. Train clinicians in reasoning, communication, advocacy, leadership skills to promote excellence in patient care. Organizer/Designer, 8-i.org in San Francisco, creative professionals donate 8 hours overtime for a non-profit (InSTEDD- Innovative Support Technologies for Emergencies, Disease, Disasters). Designer of Random Hack of Kindness in Berlin for Amnesty International on the topic: The humanitarian crisis of refugee migrants on the Mediterranean sea.
Miguel Luengo-Oroz, Founder of Malariaspot.org, Madrid
Dr. Miguel Luengo-Oroz is an antidisciplinary scientist working on crowdsourcing and data science for global challenges in international development and biomedical research. Currently, he is research fellow in Innovative Health at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid –founder of malariaspot.org – and the global research coordinator of United Nations Global Pulse – big data for development- . He is co-author of 25+ scientific publications – including the journal Science- on quantitative analysis and pattern recognition applied to multidisciplinary scientific research. He has a background in biomedical engineering (PhD), cognitive sciences (MSc), telecommunications engineering (MSc) and he is graduate from the Singularity University at NASA Ames.
Juliane Zielonka -Founder and managing director of www.uterus-myomatosus.net, Berlin
Juliane founded a platform which empowers over 20 million women in German speaking countries with health knowledge, shortens their journey to find the right physician and opens easy access to comprehensive care centers. Juliane Zielonka studied Psychology, English and German language. She has a professional training in Graphic Design with focus on new media and holds a diploma in Marketing and Communications. She combines 18 years of profound knowledge in online-communication, social media, content production (editorial and PR side) and is very well experienced in global corporate branding and the transformation of strategy into measurable operations. In 2010 she experienced intense stakeholder conflicts within the German healthcare system. She identified major problems and using her skills she crafted a solution. To bring her vision of innovative female healthcare to life, she founded a publishing and media services company called “Die Artverwandten”. The social entrepreneur is a Berlin based technology enthusiast, believes in the Cluetrain Manifesto and thinks that books will turn into “living documents”: facilitating network rooms that connect the ones belonging together. Being a member of the health 2.0 Berlin steering committee, she fosters the spirit of people-centered healthcare by organising events and connecting healthcare stakeholders.
